Agricultural Enterprise Act of 2005

Commonwealth of Virginia

A rural enterprise zone program that combined the creation of agricultural business overlay zones, on-farm business incentives and business planning assistance was proposed. The program encouraged localities to identify agricultural enterprise areas both for farming operations and support businesses. The program offered business planning assistance to eligible farm operators and agricultural businesses with a follow-up grant program to implement the business plans. The Virginia General Assembly passed the Agricultural Enterprise Act of 2005.

Sustainability in agriculture must address long-term economic viability in addition to environmental considerations. The financial requirements of entering farming are more challenging than most other industries.
